Kentucky's Closed Primaries

Understanding Primary Elections

Kentucky conducts closed primary elections, which means that only voters registered with a political party may vote in that party’s primary election.

Registered Democrats may vote only in the Democratic primary.
Registered Republicans may vote only in the Republican primary.

Other Party Registrations

Voters registered as Other (Independent, Libertarian, Green, or any political affiliation other than Democratic or Republican) do not vote in Democratic or Republican primary elections.

Voters registered as Other are eligible to vote only on nonpartisan offices and ballot questions that appear on their ballot. In Warren County, these contests occur infrequently. As a result, voters registered with a party other than Democratic or Republican will rarely have an opportunity to vote in a primary election in Warren County.

Party Affiliation Changes & Primary Elections

If you wish to vote in a Democratic or Republican primary election, you must be registered with that political party. Under Kentucky law, any change to your political party affiliation must be made no later than December 31 of the year preceding the primary election.

For example, if you want to vote in a different party’s primary in May 2027, you must change your party affiliation by December 31, 2026.

Important: If you change your party affiliation after the December 31 deadline, you will not be eligible to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary for that election cycle.
